The Big Cheese’s Responsibilities!
Our first 2015- 2016 Big Cheese will start the week of September 28, 2015!
During the school year, each child in Mrs. Burns's class will have the opportunity to be 'The Big Cheese’ for a week. The Big Cheese has special responsibilities, such as line leader, calendar helper, paper passer, etc. It is your child’s chance to be a be a community leader and star!
During the week your child is The Big Cheese, he/she has a special job each day. These activities are specifically chosen to help promote vocabulary acquisition and making real-life connections between words and their use, phonological awareness, oral language skills, counting and cardinality, fluency, and writing skills.
Monday: 'A Word that Describes Me'
The Big Cheese will be in charge of introducing one word that begins with the first letter of his/her first name. The child should ask his/her parent to write down one word (beginning with the same letter as the first letter of the child’s first name) that describes the child (ex: Christopher = careful; Eve = extraordinary; Manuel = mysterious; etc.). As each child is “The Big Cheese” (helper/special for the day), he/she introduces the word, and I will give an explicit meaning and examples of usage. I will then ask students to think of ways to use the word. We will keep a list of these words/meanings on the wall where students can see/use them. Please bring a word from home.
Tuesday: The Big Cheese chooses one of our class’s favorite morning poems or songs and leads the class in reading it/singing it.
Wednesday: Mystery Item
The Big Cheese will bring one item from home and hide it in our 'Mystery Box' (6” x 5” x 8” box). He/she will tell what letter the name of the item starts with, and the rest of the students get ten guesses to see if they can identify the mystery item! As students guess, The Big Cheese keeps track of guesses using tally marks. Please bring a Mystery Item from home. Please do not send anything valuable and NO TOYS, please! The students may handle the item, so keep this in mind when choosing. Some appropriate items might be a souvenir from a vacation, a leaf from a tree in your yard, or something else that interests your child.
Thursday: Classroom reporter: the Big Cheese gets to report on his/her favorite part of the school week to publish in the weekly newsletter! The Big Cheese will have the opportunity to write, draw, or dictate something awesome learned in school, to be published in Friday’s newsletter.
Friday: The Big Cheese chooses a favorite book for read-aloud story time (can be a short storybook from home or a favorite chosen from our class library). A parent/guardian is invited to come read the story to our class (not required- I will read the book if a parent can not make it!). Please contact Mrs. Burns to arrange a time to visit.
